After completing a two-week training evolution at the Jungle Warfare Training Center, the Marines underwent the four-mile-long course through the Okinawan jungle, utilizing the rappelling, rope-crossing, improvised stretcher carry and other skills they learned. The 31st MEU is the only continuously forward-deployed MEU and remains the nation´s force in readiness in the Asia-Pacific region.

Soldiers assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, seek out opposing forces in the rain during Urban Operations training at Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center, Miss., Sept. 28, 2011. The brigade is deploying about 3,400 soldiers to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment visit Tikrit Teaching Hospital and an orphanage to hand out gifts and school supplies to Iraqi children. Lt. Col. Stephen Ruth, commander of the Salah ad Din Stability Transition Team explains that bringing school supplies and knitting materials to a local orphanage can change a mood and soothe a heart.
